Siete siglos en España

Lost in the confusion of the Dark Ages and early Medieval times, Spain was tansformed by the arrival of Arab armies in the mid 700s A.D. Within two hundred years of their invasion, the Moors or moros, as the Spaniards called them, had built the region of Al-Andalus and its capital city of Cordoba into the most beautiful center of commerce and culture in Europe. Andalusian cities like Cordoba, Granada, and Seville were places where Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived and prospered in harmony, unlike the rest of Europe, where religious persecution continued for many more centuries. Visit these Web sites and read about Moorish Spain as you converse with a partner:

What were the greatest achievements of the Moors in Spain? What material unknown to the West was widely used in Al-Andalus? In what year was the last Muslim city taken by the Christians? What Arabic mathematical system do we still use?

Capitales árabes: Córdoba y Granada

As you learned in Activity 1, Cordoba became the European capital for scientific research and intellectual life under Muslim rule until 1236, when it fell to the Christian Reconquest. Granada then became the other great Moorish jewel in Andalusia, where the Mudejar style of architecture flourished. Explore the Web sites on this page, and view la Gran Mezquita de Córdoba, la Alhambra de Granada y los jardines del Generalife. What distinctive details of Mudejar architecture can you detect? With a partner, talk about the things that you wish to see when you visit Cordoba and Granada.

The city of Seville exemplifies Spain's rich past and exciting future. In 1492 Columbus departed from a nearby port on his first voyage to America. Five hundred years later, this bewitching city was the host of Expo 92, the 1992 World's Fair, showing off to the rest of the world the vibrant, modern, and democratic new Spain that has risen from the ashes of totalitarian rule. Sevilla es embrujo, música y luz, just three of the reasons why its visitors fall in love with it. Masters of flamenco and bullfighting have to come to Seville to be proven as such. In the culinary arts, Seville is the home of tapas, and its gazpacho is known worldwide. You are going to visit Seville on the net with a partner who has "previously" been there and who has many reccommendations for you. Share thoughts with him or her as follows:
