Si vas a Ciudad Juárez...

Ciudad Juárez is the fifth largest city in Mexico and has very strong historical links with its twin city in the United States, El Paso, Texas. Until 1848, the cities were united under the name of El Paso del Norte. Not until 1888 was the Mexican side named Ciudad Juárez after Mexican national hero Benito Juárez. For a brief period starting in 1865 it served as the capital of Mexico. In more recent times, Ciudad Juárez has become one of the most important centers of the maquiladora industry. Explore these Web sites to find out more about this city, its history and industry. As you visit the sites, converse with a classmate about Ciudad Juárez by asking and answering these questions:
¿Qué lugares vas a visitar si vas a Ciudad Juárez?

¿Por cuánto tiempo vas?

¿Qué es una maquiladora?

Benito Juárez

Benito Juárez is called el benemérito de las Américas in his native Mexico for his constant struggle to make Mexico a liberal and democratic country free of foreign invaders. In the period he served as President of the Republic, he fought and defeated the Mexican conservatives during the War of the Reform and, after five years of continuous fighting, he expelled the French invaders led by Napoleon's brother, Maximilian. Explore these sites and investigate the origin of the Fiesta de Cinco de Mayo that Mexicans still celebrate today, in their country as well as in their communities in the United States.
