In Te presento a mi familia, you've learned about families. From renowned works of literature like Cien años de soledad, 1967 (One Hundred Years of Solitude) by Gabriel García Márquez to films like Mi familia (1995), families and their stories play a central role in Hispanic culture.

Spanish speakers have been established in Los Angeles since the 1700s. In recent years, Latino actors, writers, directors and producers in Hollywood have been bringing to life stories that feature Latino families.

Look at these links to see how stories about Hispanic families reflect concerns of the Hispanic community in Los Angeles. Actors like Edward James Olmos use their celebrity status to address issues that affect individuals, families, and communities at large, such as education, health, and economic opportunities. Keep a notepad handy to write down things that you think are important while you explore the links. These questions can also help your exploration:

• What are some of the goals of Latino actors, writers and producers?

On your own or with a classmate, create a scrapbook or poster showing Latino culture in Hollywood. You might include pictures of actors and a brief description of each one stating their name, where they live, where they are from, how old they are, what they like to do, and what they might say about families. After you are done writing the description, pick a celebrity with your classmate. You can take turns being the celebrity and a journalist, interviewing and answering questions.
