The Letters of Emily Dickinson
Close to Home Except for a year at school, Emily Dickinson lived her entire life in Amherst, Massachusetts with her family. Neither Dickinson nor her sister ever married. In her 30s, Dickinson began to dress only in white and to refuse to leave her home. Some people think an unhappy love affair caused her retreat. Others believe that she chose to live quietly to protect her artistic
talent.
A Secret Poet Dickinson spent long hours in her room, secretly writing poems on scraps of paper. Of her 1,775 poems, only seven were published during her life. Dickinson experimented with punctuation, capitalization, and rhyme. Although she used simple words and short stanzas, she expressed original insights. Today, she is considered one of the most popular and influential of American poets.
