A Struggling Poet Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri. His parents separated shortly after he was born, and Hughes led a lonely childhood, moving often with his mother. After briefly attending a university in New York City, he worked at odd jobs while writing poetry and enjoying the music of Harlem. While working as a busboy, Hughes left three of his poems at a table where a well-known poet was dining. The poet was impressed with Hughes's work and introduced it to the public.

Sharing His Success For the rest of his life, Hughes traveled widely and wrote prolifically. He gave readings of his poetry to overflowing audiences and founded theaters in several cities. He also wrote a weekly newspaper column that featured stories about a black laborer and folk philosopher named Simple. After he became successful, Hughes often helped young writers who came to him for advice.
