Childhood in England Born in 1923, Denise Levertov grew up in England. Her father, a Russian Jew who converted to Christianity, became an Anglican minister who filled the house with thousands of books and interesting people like artists and writers. Her mother read classics to the family. Although Levertov never attended school, her family educated her through reading, traveling, studying nature, and going to museums.
Becoming an American Voice Levertov published her first collection of poetry when she was 23. Her second volume did not appear until ten years later. By then, she had moved to New York and evolved into a thoroughly American poet. Her poetry has covered many subjects, including the Vietnam
War, the Gulf War, pollution, and the threat of nuclear weapons.
