First Daughter When Franklin Delano Roosevelt died suddenly on April 12, 1945, Harry S. Truman became President of the United States. He moved into the White House with his wife, Bess, and his 21-year-old daughter, Margaret. The Trumans were a close, devoted family with a strong sense of privacy. In her autobiography, Margaret Truman comments on that time: "As a family, we had a code, which was to do the right thing, do it the best we could, never complain and never take advantage. When my father became President, our code did not change."
Thumbs Down After graduating from George Washington University in 1946, Truman sang professionally in operas, acted, and worked in radio and television. For seven years, as a President's daughter, Truman had a tough time. She was sometimes the object of ridicule and harsh reviews from criticsparticularly over her singing.
Insider Accounts In 1954 she gave up her performing career and two years later published her first bookan autobiographical work called Souvenir. She later wrote biographies of her parents and a collection of biographies, Women of Courage, from which this selection comes. Truman has also drawn on her knowledge of political life in the nation's capital to write 15 murder mysteries. These mysteries all center around famous sites in Washington, D.C. Truman's biographies and mysteries have been bestsellers.
