Title: Violence Is Preventable

Goal 7 of the Goals 2000: Educate America Act states that "by the year 2000, every school in America will be free of drugs and violence and will offer a disciplined environment conducive to learning." Although short-term violence prevention strategies such as metal detectors, dress codes, suspensions, and expulsions can make students and teachers feel safer after an incident of violence, more needs to be done to actually create safer schools. The authors of this article feel strongly that teaching social and emotional skills to students must become part of school curriculum in order to produce responsible, caring students and communities.
