Title: Implementing Speaking and Listening Standards: Information for English Teachers
Author: Nancy Rost Goulden
Source: Educational Leadership, September 1998
In many schools, the traditional language arts curriculum has expanded to include speaking, listening, and media literacy skills. English teachers have to make changes in the way they teach in order to include these new skills; however, many English teachers are not trained in speech education and need help in implementing speaking and listening instruction in their classrooms. The author offers general information about speaking and listening content areas and practical ways to incorporate instruction of speaking and listening skills. She also gives "specific information about the processes of speaking and listening that teachers can use when planning instruction, assignments, and assessments."
