English Language Learners
Title: Language, Literature, and Learning in the ESL Classroom

The authors of this article, both ESL teachers, propose changing the traditional methods used to teach English in ESL classes. Instead of using language exercises and simplified versions of classic books to teach language skills, ESL teachers should teach by first immersing students in engaging literature. Because ESL classes are often the place where students begin to gain a cultural perspective, and because no one text "can be expected to represent a full picture of any culture or people," the authors suggest using "an inclusive sampling of all that North American literature has to offer." Multicultural literature, in particular, speaks to universal experiences, motivates real language learning, and shapes cultural understanding. The article includes strategies teachers can use to promote discussion of literature and language-learning.
