Authors: Children's Literature and Reading Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association
Source: The Reading Teacher, February 1999
Every year, the Children's Literature and Reading Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association develops a list of "Notable Books for a Global Society." This article is a collection of reviews of the books that appeared on the 1998 list. In choosing books, the committee members look for "quality literature that is culturally authentic and rich in cultural details and that celebrates both diversity and the common bonds of humanity." The selections cover all levels, from primary to young adult, and are organized into the following themes: Stories of the Past, Heritage and Childhood Memories, Devastation of War, Celebrating People and Places.
Title: Finding Common Ground: Multicultural YA Literature
Authors: Chris Crowe
Source: English Journal, November 1998
Using a vignette from his classroom, the author reflects on the need to teach students about other cultures and to get them to "see the world from a different point of view." He explains how "reading quality multicultural young adult books can help adolescent readers find common ground with young people who, on the surface, seem to be very different." He also discusses how the label "multicultural young adult literature" marginalizes books that should be thought of first as simply good literature. A list of recommended books is included.
