Title: The Nurturing Potential of Service Learning

Authors: Sandra Krystal

Source: Educational Leadership, December 1998 - January 1999

The author suggests that service learning projects are the most effective way to develop feelings of pride and empathy in students. Service learning projects give students a chance to develop "positive connections with their communities and positive feelings about themselves." Students who help others are energized by the feeling of being needed and excited to discover new talents in themselves. In addition, service learning can have positive effects on teachers, who benefit from the transformation of students and classrooms and from strengthened bonds with the community.
